My MASSAGE AND WHAT TO EXPECT

HYDRATION RECOMMENDATION:

It is important that clients come to their appointment well hydrated. My recommendation is to increase your water intake at least 24 hours before your appointment. Ideally, you should attempt to consume an amount equal to your body weight in pounds, converted to ounces, divided by half. For example, a 200 pound man should attempt to take in close to 100 ounces of water. This will help the body process the toxins entering the blood stream as a result of the massage. Your skin and muscles will likely be less tender and more responsive to the treatment.

INTAKE:

In your first visit I will spend time getting to know your history, your situation and any issues you may need addressed. I may check for any mechanical issues with your mobility or any postural distortions with your body structure. One of my strengths is in assessing a condition and figuring out the best strategy to approach it. Together we can decide a course of action that works best for you. In my office there are charts of the body that display the muscles combined with mapped regions of the major trigger points to help clients visually connect with the areas of the body they are sensing.

THE MASSAGE:

I will say up front that this type of therapy is not a spot treatment, nor is it a quick fix. The body is wrapped in many complex layers of fascia, so it is important for clients to understand it may take several sessions to correct a condition, especially if there are multiple issues that have existed for an extended period of time or if any of the issues are acute.

I will relax the body with Swedish effleurage and then work into deeper modalities such as trigger point therapy. Depending on the tolerance and area of concern I may also utilize active release, mayo-fascial stretching and deep cross-fibering techniques. I encourage my clients to dictate the pressure that is tolerable for them. It is important that the body stay as relaxed as possible, so if an individual feels like they are tensing I can adjust the pressure.

The duration of a session can be dictated by many factors: budget, time constraints, type of issues, amount of issues as well as pain tolerance. Initially a client may decide they are quite tender and choose to start easy with a 60 minute massage. Another client may decide they have several issues that need attention and option for an extended 90 minute massage.

CONCLUSION:

Upon the conclusion of the massage I will take a moment to discuss with my clients anything they care to share about their experience, my assessment of their condition and any further course of action we may decide to take. The client is free to rebook with me on the spot or may wish to take the time to assess their own reaction to the treatment. Past clients have come to me more frequently initially until they started experiencing relief; then they might gap their sessions out further apart. I've found for those wishing to maintain a certain level of relief that coming every 4-8 weeks seems optimal.

DETOX BATH:

The evening of the appointment I encourage my clients to take a 'Detox Bath'. I also recommend that the individual avoid as much stress and exertion as possible for up to 48 hours after a session. The reason is to allow the body to adjust to the release the massage has provided. Soft tissue may continue to unwind for several days after a session so ample time is encouraged to allow this process to complete.
